One of the finest luxury cars built today.

The Jaguar XJ8 represents the highest point in Jaguar's history. It's one of the finest luxury sedans built today. The Vanden Plas, named for a famous British maker of custom automobile bodies, is the most luxurious XJ8, swathed in chrome, walnut and lambs wool.

As the XJ8 designation suggests, this is a V8-powered Jaguar.

Jaguar's XJ8 is available in four versions: the XJ8, the long wheelbase XJ8L, the even more luxurious Vanden Plas, and the supercharged and fully loaded XJR.

For luxury with a difference, drive a Jaguar XJ8.

2006 Pontiac Torrent

Pontiac ’s new car-based, compact SUV.

The all-new 2006 Pontiac Torrent is the biggest of the compact SUVs. Based on a car chassis, the Torrent offers a nice ride and good power.

The available leather seats are nice, the premium stereo sounds good, and the low dash offers a good view of the road ahead. Convenience features include a sliding and reclining back seat that offers extended leg room or more cargo space according to your needs, and a clever tray in back for cargo versatility.

Torrent is Pontiac 's first true sport utility vehicle. It's built on the platform of the Chevy Equinox. Unlike most Pontiacs , Torrent's styling is restrained, clean and pleasing.

The 2006 Pontiac Torrent comes with a choice of two trims the front-wheel drive ($22,400) or all-wheel drive ($24,300). Torrent is powered by GM's 3.4-liter V6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. Only one trim level is offered, but with a variety of options.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, power windows, AM/FM/CD with six speakers, remote entry and automatic door locks, fog lamps, roof rails, daytime running lights, a rear window wiper, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.

Safety features that come standard include ABS, a rear child-seat latch system, and the mandated front airbags. Traction control comes standard on front-wheel-drive models; all-wheel-drive further enhances safety, of course. An optional Security Package ($1090) includes side curtain airbags and one year of Onstar service. Electronic stability control isn't available.

The Pontiac Torrent is among the biggest of the compact SUVs. It's a competent vehicle with some nice convenience features.

2006 Buick Lucerne CXL V8

The front-wheel-drive, 5-passenger 2006 Buick Lucerne CXL V8 replaces the LaSabre and Park Avenue, shares a platform, and in the case of this CXL, the V8 engine, with the pricier Cadillac DTS. Lucerne is thoroughly modern and completely updated while maintaining the soft, gentle and convenient personality the full-size Buick base demands.

Styling and design are certainly conservative. “Elegant and contemporary” says GM. The 18-inch, 10-spoke cast aluminum wheels, shod with standard 245/50 Bridgestone Turanzas, go a long way toward making the Lucerne look more modern.

Power comes from the high tech 4.6-litre Northstar V8. The chain-driven dual overhead cam, port injected, aluminum engine puts out 275 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. Power gets to the wheels by way of the smooth-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission and 3.11 final drive gears. Acceleration is brisk with zero-to-60 mph reached in 6.9 seconds and zero-to-100 in 18 seconds. Look for the chrome tipped dual exhaust to know it’s the V-8 Buick.

Fully independent front and rear suspension with anti-roll bars at both ends stabilize the handling although there is a bit too much body lean for my taste. Magnetic variable assist power rack and pinion steering feels tight and quick for a big luxury sedan. Disc brakes with ABS and traction control at all four wheels make for extreme confidence in stopping.

Pontiac will get entry-level coupe

General Motors will give Pontiac an entry-level coupe as a stopgap measure until the division gets more brand-focused products, sources close to Pontiac say. In the process, Pontiac dealers will lose the Montana SV6 minivan.

The coupe will be a high-performance relative of the Chevrolet Cobalt coupe with some Pontiac influences. The vehicle will give the Buick-Pontiac-GMC channel a shot at the small-car market, a source close to GM says. GM is still considering names for it. One option might be the G5, sources say.

Pontiac intends to launch the coupe as a 2007 model and likely will start production this fall in Lordstown, Ohio .

The car will be priced similarly to the Chevrolet Cobalt SS supercharged coupe, which starts at $20,490, including shipping.

Pontiac eventually will lose the Montana SV6 minivan, which has seen sluggish sales and does not fit Pontiac 's performance-brand image, sources say. sales of the SV6 for January fell to 1,450 units, an 11.5 percent drop from 1,638 in the year-ago period.

Pontiac has lacked an entry-level car since the Sunfire died last year.

2007 GMC Yukon XL at LA Auto Show

GMC announced the all-new 2007 Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali full-size SUVs at LA Auto Show. The line is led by the Yukon XL Denali, with unique styling and features – including a 6.2L V-8 engine that delivers the most horsepower in its class, with variable valve timing and a fuel-saving six-speed automatic transmission.

Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali models deliver more power and better fuel economy than the vehicles they replace, enhancing GMC’s “more than expected” reputation. The vehicles are based on GM’s all-new full-size SUV family, which features distinctive styling, spacious and refined interiors, exceptional driving characteristics and enhanced safety features. They complement the recently introduced 2007 Yukon and Yukon Denali models to round out GMC’s full-size SUV lineup – offering the broadest and most capable lineup of SUVs in GMC’s more than 100 years of building trucks.

Yukon XL and Yukon XL Denali become available in the second quarter of 2006. The XL models have exterior dimensions similar to the regular models, but are about 14 inches (355.6 mm) longer in wheelbase and 20 inches (508 mm) longer in overall length. Yukon XL is available in SLE (cloth trim) and SLT trim (leather appointments), as well as 2WD and 4WD configurations and a heavy-duty model.

For a pre-owned 2004 Pontiac GTO

Consistent with the GTO's promise to be more of a driver's car than a family transporter or utilitarian commuter, comfort and convenience features are minimal, at least by today's standards. Leather upholstery is standard. It comes with power mirrors, power front seats, and power locks.

The AM/FM/CD stereo features a dash-mounted six-disc changer. The leather-wrapped steering wheel tilts and telescopes. In deference to memory lapses sometimes induced by daytime running lights, headlights have an auto-on setting. And cruise control gives the driver's right leg a break on long drives. But there's no navigation system available, and shoppers wanting set-it-and-forget-it climate control will be disappointed because the HVAC is manual. Nor are there memory settings for a driver's preferred seating and mirror positions, stereo station presets, suspension stiffness, and so on. About the only item possibly falling outside the category of modern necessaries are the standard front and rear floor mats.

Much the same holds for safety gear. For occupants, three-point seatbelts and dual frontal airbags are about it. There is an alarm system, and a keyless remote, but no side airbags or head curtains. Antilock brakes, traction control and a limited-slip differential are standard.
